the Box
Service learning is an innovative teaching method that helps students practice academic learning in a meaningful way—a way that connects them with the world around them. It improves academic performance, reinforces learning, and motivates students to become more invested in their school, their community, and their world.
When young people use what they learn in the classroom to solve real needs in their community, they develop their skills, build their character, improve their self-esteem, and foster their sense of civic responsibility.
Service Learning
Studying nutrition is learning.
Feeding the needy is service.
Integrating the two—letting students apply what they've learned by planning, budgeting, shopping for, and preparing healthy meals for a homeless shelter—is service learning.
